Stranger Things - Video SciFi Anthology

Posted on June 18th, 2008

It amazed me to find an entertaining, and interesting science fiction video series produced independently and distributed solely through the internet. Stranger Things has broken many firsts - becoming the first anthology series delivered via podcast, the first program syndicated through Second Life, and one of the most highly subscribed podcasts worldwide.

The series itself, created by Earl Newton, is very reminiscent of the X-Files as investigators probe into otherworldly happenings trying to unravel the mystery. They curently have 4 episodes released, and plan to release episodes 5-7 soon.

Rowan Atkinson does Who?

Rowan Atkinson does Who?

Rowan Atkinson is best known for his role as Bean, the eccentric loner from the British series of the same name. But you may not know that he played Dr. Who once too, in: Doctor Who and the Curse of Fatal Death

In this episode, the Doctor announces his retirement to his old enemy the Master, after stating that he “has saved every planet in the known universe a minimum of 27 times” and he’s getting tired of it. This episode is 4 hours long and currently I’ve only been able to find it on VHS, but if you are a serious Dr. Who fan and enjoy British comedy - this will send you digging out that old video tape player out of the closet.

What the Frak? Final Cylon not yet revealed!

Those bastards are holding out on us!

As usual, Battlestar Galactica delivered an episode with a good story and great special effects in The Hub. But many of the fans, including myself we’re hoping that the final cylon would be revealed. If you’ve been following the blogs, boards, and especially the comments discussing the show most of us weren’t expecting Roslyn to be revealed as a the Final Cylon - but we were hoping for a revelation.

Like D’Anna said she has to hold onto the truth in order survive, perhaps the producers feel the same way. I personally believe that this show has enough to drive it through the season break with most of it’s fanbase intact. It was pretty hilarious though the way she messed with Roslyn.

The funniest part of the episode was Baltar trying to convert a Centurion to his religion. Could you imagine it, a bunch of peace loving centurions surrounding Baltar hanging on his every word? He definately would have quite an experience getting one of those in bed now wouldn’t he!

My bet is still on Dualla, I’ve been convinced since reading that post on Cellounge. But with Ron Moore’s dark enjoyment over messing with the show’s fans anything is possible at this point.

StarShipSofa exploring the stars and the creators

Posted on June 6th, 2008

StarShipSofa has lately become a favorite podcast of mine since reading about it in a BoingBoing article. The first thing that caught my attention was the host - his enthusiasm for the art can be heard in his voice and how deeply he gets into introducing the material. Tony C. Smith really loves the stories and authors he introduces and will often tell you an anecdote about what was going on in his head or in his surroundings while he was listening to it. Often expressing himself with some great interjections like “tonight we have a crackin’ good story!” he pulls you into the material easily.

Honestly, I don’t know if I like the scifi or the host’s personality better. But he does deliver some good science fiction stories and often alternates his podcasts with a historical background about an author so science fiction fans can get a deeper understanding as to how some of these stories came about.

So if your looking for your next podcast, visit the StarShipSofa website and download some good audio or subscribe to the podcast through iTunes.
